EDUCATION
Kalin Dimitrov receive his master’s degree in History with a specialization in “Archaeology” at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in 1992 with a thesis on “Cross-blade copper axes in South-East Europe”. Specialisations in Paris (Center de recherche et de restauration des musées de France (C2RMF), Louvre) and Ghent University, Department of Prehistory.
In 2007, under the supervision of Prof. Henrietta Todorova, K. Dimitrov defended a doctoral degree on the “Earliest Copper Metallurgy on the West Coast of the Black Sea, 4th millennium BC.”
K. Dimitrov is fluent in French, English and Russian.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Since 2020, K. Dimitrov has been acting as Deputy Director of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the BAS, combining this work with his work as a marine archaeologist at the Center for Underwater Archaeology, Sozopol (CPA). In the period 2016 – 2020, K. Dimitrov was the director of CPA. Since 2010, he is assistant professor, doctor in the “Prehistoric Archaeology department“ at the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). In the period 2007-2010 he was assistant professor, doctor at the Center for Trachology at the BAS. Before that, he worked as secretary of the Archeology Department of Sofia University, he was international editor and journalist in various media.
PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS AND EXPERIENCE
Kalin Dimitrov’s research interests are in the field of the earliest metallurgy of the Balkans, early mining and processing of copper and gold. In the area of underwater archaeology, his interests are focused on coastal settlements from the 5th – 3rd millennium BC, early shipping and the study of paleo environmental changes.
Kalin Dimitrov participated as a director, deputy director or team member in a number of archaeological projects –the submerged prehistoric settlements in the port of Sozopol, the settlement in the bay in front of the mouth of the Ropotamo River, the sunken fortresses and ports of Nessebar, the shipwrecks near Chernomorets and Cape Urdoviza.
Kalin, Dimitrov is co-director on the Bulgarian side of the international maritime archeology project “Black Sea MAP”.
K. Dimitrov is an active participant in the long-term archaeological research of prehistoric necropolises and settlements near the village of Durankulak, NE Bulgaria.
K. Dimitrov has extensive experience as a participant, coordinator or manager in international projects: “Promahon – Topolnitsa” Project, “Ottoman Shipwreck Kiten – Urdoviza”, Extension of the Danube Limes – UNESCO World Heritage in the Lower Danube, Danube Limes Brand, SEE /D/0307/4.3/X, South East Europe Transnational Cooperation Programme; DFG project “Ressourcen und die Herausbildung von Ungleichheit. Rohstoffe und Kommunikationssysteme im prähistorischen Südosteuropa’ (Resources and the generation of inequality. Raw materials and communication systems in prehistoric Southeast Europe), together with the University of Tübingen.
In 2019, he was elected as a member of the Scientific and advisory Bord of the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage.
He is member of the Limes Commission in Bulgaria.
Since 2016, he is a member of the Council for Field Studies and the Council for Immovable Cultural Heritage under the Minister of Culture.
He is an active participant in numerous commissions for the preparation or amendments of the legislation in the field of archeology in the Ministry of Culture and the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria.
Since 2001, K. Dimitrov has been giving various courses in archeology at Sofia University and New Bulgarian University.
Kalin Dimitrov is co-founder and vice-chairman of the Association of Bulgarian Archaeologists (ABA).
